Writing score from 5 to 7: How to use Grammarly to improve your IELTS writing score?
Many people have been preparing for their writing test by writing as many essays as they can. However, this may only be a good way to practice if their essays are reviewed by a writing expert. Otherwise, they may not realize their mistakes and are more likely to make these mistakes again and again. So what you can do if you have a bundle of your writing stuff but find no one to check them? Thanks to the advent of Grammarly, you can check your essays effectively without hiring someone to do it. In this post, I will show you the way to improve your writing using Grammarly.
Things Grammarly can help you on your essay
To improve your IELTS writing score, it’s vital for you to understand how your essays are marked and adjust your writing based on these criteria.
In fact, the examiner will mark your essay based on four criteria, which are:
- Task Achievement/task response: you must write a well-developed report that completely addresses all parts of the task.
- Coherence and Cohesion: your ideas and in information must follow a logical organization(coherence), and you must use a range of cohesive devices skillfully.
- Lexical Resource: you must use a wide range of vocabulary fluently with few errors.
- Grammatical range and accuracy: you must use a wide range of grammatical structures fluently and accurately with few errors.

How to use Grammarly to check your writing essay

1. Getting Grammarly
When you click on the link above you will see this:
Step 1: Choose to SIGN UP or LOG IN
If you are new to Grammarly, click “Add to Firefox/Chrome/Safari” to sign up. Otherwise, just click “Log in”.
Step 2: SIGN UP
In this step, you can sign up by using your Facebook account or your email address. I will choose to use my email account.
After fill out all necessary information, click “Sign up”
Step 3: Welcome terminal
After finishing signing up, you will be directed to what I call “welcome terminal”. In this terminal, you may choose to go with free account or get premium account
Step 4: Free account terminal
When you choose the free option, you will face this notification. You may view a quick tour of how Grammarly works or skip it to start your writing.
2. Starting your writing on the online text editor
To create new document, please click “New” or “Upload” to upload your own file
Once you select to add a new document, you will be directed to the text editor provided by Grammarly which looks like this:
As IELTS writing test is made on paper, I highly recommend you to write your essay on paper and then typing them on the Grammarly’s text editor.
3. Example of how Grammarly help you check your essay and improve your writing stuff
Now I will give you an example of how Grammarly corrects your essay and gives you suggestion to improve writing.
If you use the free version, what you can see are basic issues which are placed on the right-hand side of the screen. Additionally, you can see in the bottom right corner, there are 171 critical and advanced issues which only see by using premium version. So it’s the best if you subscribe to the premium version.
In this part of writing, Grammarly identified a number of errors such as punctuation, overused words, etc. In the case of overused words, Grammarly also suggests you words to replace the overused ones. For example, the word “completely” was used many times, therefore, Grammarly suggests you to replaced it with “ultimately” or “thoroughly”. As a result, you can expand your vocabulary list by learning many synonyms of common words.
